Thanksgiving Facts throughout History

  • Sarah Josepha Hale, an American magazine editor, persuaded Abraham Lincoln to declare Thanksgiving a national holiday. She is also the author of the popular nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb”
  • Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving.
  • The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920’s.
  • In 1939, President Roosevelt proclaimed that Thanksgiving would take place on November 23rd, not November 30th, as a way to spur economic growth and extend the Christmas shopping season.
  • Congress passed a law on December 26, 1941, ensuring that all Americans would celebrate a unified Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November every year.
OCPBC giving back this holiday season

Collecting food & toys for the needy.
There are 936,000 people in South Florida that will go hungry
this holiday season and though we can’t help all of them we can strive to donate food to help even just a few of those hungry children and families in need.
Please join us by donating a food item to help needy families
this holiday season.
Most Useful Food Items donated:
Canned Meats/Tuna/Chicken
Rice / Beans (Dry or Canned)
Peanut Butter / Jellies (Plastic)
Canned Fruit / Veggies
Macaroni and Cheese
Soups / Stews / Chili
Canned Ravioli / Spaghetti & Meat
The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a shiny new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to needy children that will motivate them to grow into responsible, productive adults. You can donate a new toy for Children in need this holiday season and put an amazing smile on a child’s face Christmas morning.
Starting the day after Thanksgiving, there will be bins placed in our
Lake Worth , Boynton Beach and Wellington offices  for your donations.
The food drive items will be collected and picked up throughout the holiday season.
The gifts will be picked up by December 16th for children to receive on Christmas morning.
We would love to be a part of every donation.  When you drop off your item, take a picture of your donation and post it to our Facebook Page using #OCPBCgivingback. Let’s see how much food and how many toys we can collect for the needy families of Palm Beach County!
