Arthritis is no joke. It affects about 54 million adults in America and can seriously impact your quality of life as you age. There are over 100 different types of arthritis and even more ways to possibly treat it. In extremely painful cases, surgery might be the best or only option you have for getting a grip on the discomfort while also returning to your full range of motion. For those that suffer from ankle arthritis & joint pain, a total ankle replacement might be the ticket to living a more pain-free life.
Who is a Candidate for a Total Ankle Replacement?
Typically, your Foot & Ankle Surgeon will recommend surgery based on your levels of pain while performing day-to-day activities. If you are unable to do what you need to do every day and get no relief from over-the-counter medication or with braces, you might be a candidate for total ankle replacement.
Preparing for Surgery
Leading up to the procedure, you will be evaluated by a physician to make sure you are physically able to have the surgery. This includes evaluating your heart, kidneys, and lungs and making sure any infections or illnesses are taken care of well in advance of the procedure.
Procedure and Recovery Period
The actual surgery takes around one hour and a half to complete. Your surgeon will make an incision in the front of your ankle. The joint is then replaced with a smooth metal surface and a high-density polyethylene. When you wake up from surgery, your ankle will be in an apparatus that is soft in the front and hard in the back. Some patients will be admitted to the hospital and some can be done outpatient. You will have to be non-weight bearing for six weeks following the surgery.
